A LOOK BACK AT THE MANGROVE NINE

On 9 August 1970, 150 protesters marched the streets of Notting Hill, West London, to demonstrate against the racial harassment of black people at the hands of the police. While many factors came into play, the protests were mainly sparked by the repeated police raids at Mangrove, a beloved local restaurant and social hub for the Black community in the area.  Led by activists Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett, the group became known as the Mangrove Nine after being arrested and charged with incitement to riot...

Behind The Scenes: Lifestyle Photoshoot

On the 25 th September, the ‘Mangrove’ episode of ‘Small Axe’, a five-part anthology series by Steve McQueen premiered at the New York Film Festival and be later released on BBC One and Amazon Prime at the end of November. Here are some behind the scenes images from our most recent photoshoot, where the creative concept was based on looking back at the game changers of British History. This date, 16th December 1971 is the day in which the trial concluded at the Old Bailey, where the Mangrove Nine stood their ground and defended themselves for two months.
